HDR, or High Dynamic Range, is something that's existed in photography for a long time and now, camera phone manufacturers are featuring it in their devices. It's designed to help you capture photos that have a better dynamic range (shadows to highlights) it does improve picture quality. There are times when using this feature will be more beneficial than others such as when capturing landscapes, outdoor portraits in sunlight and in heavily backlit scenes. Try to avoid using this mode when you're in a place where people are moving through the shot, though, as your phone is actually capturing multiple images and combining them so any movement will show in the final photo.
As well as the automatic 'point and click' option, most mid- to high-end smartphones offer a pro / manual mode of some sorts. What you can control tends to differ from phone-to-phone but generally speaking, you'll be able to edit the ISO, shoot in RAW, adjust the white balance of the shot and use exposure compensation. The high-end phones also have a portrait/selective focus mode that will blur the background of your image, giving the impression of bokeh you capture on digital cameras when using wider apertures.
There may not be enough light in places such as interiors on overcast days, in caves, at gigs in darkened rooms etc. for your smartphone to capture a good photograph so, in situations like this, the camera will bump up the ISO levels so it's more sensitive to light. This is great but by doing so can increase the chances of noise spoiling your shot. Most smartphones have a noise reduction feature but this can be quite strong and turn parts of the image into mush which can ruin the photo just as much as noise does.
Well, you can avoid all low light scenarios but this is just impractical or you could use a support and select a longer shutter speed from the more advanced camera settings but again, it's impractical. So you're better off looking in your smartphone's advanced camera settings to see if you can control the ISO levels.
4K video is something appearing on newer smartphones and, of course, it means video you capture is of better quality. The latest smartphones offer 4K video at 60fps for even smoother footage. Check to see if stabilisation is used when capturing video footage as this will improve the quality considerably and the option to use continuous AF while recording will mean you can capture better videos, too.
Less expensive smartphones tend to max video quality out at 1080p or even 720p. It's also worth remembering that 4K video will take up lots of room so if you don't have a phone with a large storage capacity, or one where you can use memory cards in, you may want to stick to shooting FullHD video.
The majority of smartphones have a built-in LED flash but as they tend to be a bit harsh when used up close and don't reach very far when photographing subjects that are further away, it's not something that needs to be paid much attention to. In fact, most of the time you'll want to turn the flash off as the camera tends to be set to 'auto flash' which can fire when you don't want it to. Some offer a dual-tone LED flash for improved lighting, and if you're selfie obsessed then you may want to find a smartphone with a front selfie LED flash.
Knowing how quickly the phone's camera can focus and the shutter response is useful but you'll probably have to read reviews to find this out. Knowing how many frames per second (fps) the camera can capture images at is also useful to know as a quick fps can increase your chances of capturing a good photo in situations where your subject is moving.
When it comes to autofocus, on most camera phones you press the screen where you want the camera to focus and this is pretty much across all models but some do offer modes such as smile detection and face-priority AF for those who are more social shooters.

A small-screen (5 inches or less) cell phone is great when looking for a nice, compact design. Portability is also better with a smaller screen, but unfortunately, the small screen category is a shrinking segment in the mobile phone industry. Most smartphones of this size are considered entry-level or have lower resolutions, resulting in many consumers choosing larger screens for better, more enhanced visuals.
Medium screen sizes (5.5 to 6.5 inches) are the most commonly purchased since they are fairly comfortable to use with one hand, while still being able to include great resolution specs. This is the go-to screen size that falls right between too small and too large.

You may notice device screens these days are labeled LED, OLED or AMOLED. OLED screens control each pixel individually and therefore, can provide deeper black levels. While they may not offer the same brightness, this precise control helps conserve energy. While this may seem like a drawback, remember that the iPhone iOS provides a variety of iCloud packages for you to offload personal content if you need to. On the other hand, most Android cell phones under $699 do have the ability to expand memory; premium Androids above $699 unfortunately do not have this luxury.
The capacity of a cell phone battery is measured in milliamp hours, which really just refers to the size of the battery itself. While this info may be helpful when shopping for a new device, remember that plenty of factors affect the battery performance including your operating system, network/data use, display size/type and more. It also depends on what daily tasks and functions one will be using on a daily basis, like social media and gaming apps. Based on our testing, we'd recommend 8GB RAM for most Android users. That said, we noticed tangible benefits to having 12GB of memory as well. While Android phones with 4GB of RAM do exist, it's not enough for a smooth multitasking experience so budget shoppers should look for at least 6GB instead.
Every computer, including your smartphone, uses Random Access Memory (RAM). Your currently running programs, their data, and the OS are all stored in RAM while the computer is working. Ten or so years ago, Android devices had 512MB or 1GB of memory. However, the average amount of RAM in devices grew quickly. In 2014, many premium devices had 3GB of RAM and 4GB became the de facto standard a couple of years later. 4GB is now considered the bare minimum for a new device.
No matter how much RAM your device has, it’s a finite resource that has to be managed. Whenever you open a new app, it needs to occupy a portion of this memory. Simple apps and games will use a few hundred megabytes, while more sophisticated games might use up to a gigabyte of RAM. The most demanding games can use up to 1.5GB of RAM.
With 4GB of RAM, there’s just enough room for several medium games or apps, along with the OS, to reside happily together. However, at some point, there will be no more free RAM.
To handle this eventuality, modern computers use a technique known as swapping. The oldest and least used pages of memory are written out to the swap storage, and the memory they occupied in RAM becomes free. If that swapped-out memory is needed later, the saved memory pages are read back from storage and copied back into RAM (swapped-in). This greatly increases the amount of available memory to store apps and data but the trade-off is that it’s much slower compared to RAM.
Desktops, laptops, and servers use external storage (hard drives, flash storage) as swap space. Android uses a slightly different technique. Instead of writing out the pages to storage, Android compresses the data and writes it back into RAM. This is known as zRAM, following the Unix/Linux tradition of using “z” to denote compression. If we assume a 50% compression ratio, 128KB of RAM can reduce to 64KB, freeing up 64KB. The Linux kernel sees zRAM exactly as it would see traditional swap space. The compressed memory isn’t directly readable, so if it is needed it must be uncompressed and copied back, just like traditional swapping-in.
